The project takes place in Perugia, home to the Residence "Daniele Chianelli", a dedicated facility where patients undergoing outpatient hematology treatment can stay, coming from across Italy and, in many cases, from other parts of the world.
A diagnosis of a hematological disease is a critical event that reaches far beyond the body, touching the psychological, relational and social life of the person and their whole family. It can bring anxiety, depression, fear of the future, social isolation and a loss of meaning, effects that extend well past the physical symptoms and the treatment itself. Hematological conditions are increasingly long-term illnesses today, and psychological support helps prevent the anxiety and depression tied to that trauma from becoming chronic in their own right, while also improving how well patients stick with their treatment.
The project
"Insieme nella Cura" supports patients from the Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant wards and Day Hospital at Perugia's hospital, as well as those staying at the Residence "Daniele Chianelli", through individual psychological support, alongside dedicated support for their families and group sessions for patients in follow-up care.
The project also turns towards the people caring for these patients every day: doctors, nurses and healthcare support workers receive training and their own group psychological support, recognising that looking after patients' psychosocial needs, alongside their medical treatment, is essential to their quality of life and their ability to cope with and stay engaged in their own care.
Who the project is for
The project's beneficiaries are patients of the Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant wards, the Hematology Day Hospital, and the Residence "Daniele Chianelli", together with their families and the ward staff, doctors, nurses and healthcare support workers, who support them.
