Across Castelli Calepio, Sarnico, Credaro, Villongo, Predore and Grumello del Monte, in the Grumello and Basso Sebino areas of the province of Bergamo, families, schools, educators, social services and local administrations all point to the same gap: too few accessible, ongoing extracurricular activities for adolescents and young people with disabilities.
Traditional music courses are often hard to access, and once school ends, opportunities to socialise tend to shrink sharply, made worse by transport difficulties that leave many young people more isolated than they need to be.
The project
SonOro promotes social inclusion, participation and relational wellbeing for young people with disabilities through a continuous, structured pathway of inclusive musical education. Orchestral practice values each participant's own contribution, strengthening autonomy, listening and cooperation while protecting emotional wellbeing throughout.
Each of the 8 participants is paired with a dedicated companion, taking part in ensemble music sessions, individual lessons and open events that build genuine musical autonomy and a real sense of belonging. Continuity, careful monitoring, family involvement and strong roots in the local area guide every part of the programme.
Who the project is for
The project's direct beneficiaries are 8 young people, already identified and enrolled, aged 13 to 20, from Castelli Calepio, Credaro, Villongo and Sarnico.
Its impact reaches further, to their families and caregivers, schools, educators, social services, municipalities, associations and cooperatives, along with everyone who takes part in the project's open activities.
