For many children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, break time can turn into a source of discomfort: poorly structured courtyards and chaotic environments accentuate sensory and social difficulties, leading to isolation, anxiety and, in some cases, episodes of exclusion or bullying. The lack of safe and regulated spaces impairs their well-being and hinders school inclusion.

Creating accessible, welcoming and stimulating places is not only an educational necessity, but also a recognized right: that of an inclusive school and equal growth opportunities.

What the project involves

The project was created to transform schoolyards into inclusive environments capable of accommodating the needs of neurodivergent students. Following the principles already tested in the “space of calm” created in the Gran Jonquera shopping center, the model involves the creation of structured areas, designed to encourage emotional self-regulation, positive interactions and active participation.

Through guided activities, educational tools and awareness-raising courses, backyards become places for meeting and socializing, reducing disruptive behaviour and preventing the risk of exclusion or harassment.

The project is based on values of inclusion, equity, respect for diversity and positive coexistence. At the same time, it offers teachers and the educational community concrete tools to support the participation of students with autism, generating a widespread impact that goes beyond the individual schoolyard.

The beneficiaries

The direct beneficiaries are approximately 330 pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other special educational needs of the school center involved.

Indirect beneficiaries will be over 5,000 people, including students, teachers and families, who will benefit from a more inclusive, safe and collective well-being-oriented school environment.
