In light of several important studies, Fundació Anna Rovira Codina Stop Sarcoma claims that sarcoma cells reaching the lung are able to specifically modify the immune response. On this basis, the Foundation aims to identify the different cell states that contribute to metastasis and are responsible for tumour recurrence, thus contributing to the design of new therapies.

What the project involves

This project has the potential to provide new insights into the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying metastatic progression in various sarcomas. Specifically, the work involves three research phases: evaluation of the immune component of the tumour microenvironment in lung metastases of different sarcomas by RNA sequencing of patient samples; evaluation of the most active signalling pathways in metastatic samples; and histological study of the different populations, pathways, and potential therapeutic targets identified.

Expected Outcomes

  • Enabling patients diagnosed with sarcoma to live longer and even recover completely in cases where this is impossible today
  • Contributing to the development of new therapeutic strategies

The beneficiaries

The project is dedicated to the general population, specifically to patients diagnosed with sarcoma. In Spain, between 22 and 24% of new cancer cases diagnosed each year are defined as “rare tumours”.
