ASION's project is developed in the Community of Madrid, working with cancer patients and their families in any of the hospitals with a paediatric oncology unit in the capital of Madrid. It also involves the Quirón Pozuelo hospital, where in addition to the oncology unit there is one of the two proton therapy centres in Spain.
What the project involves
The overall objective of the project is to provide comprehensive and specialised care to prevent, treat, and ameliorate the consequences of cancer during childhood and adolescence, paying attention to psychosocial needs in the family environment resulting from the treatment process.
ASION operators carry out a range of activities: direct contact with families and psychosocial support, immediate psychological support for the child or adolescent with cancer, and individualised focus on the needs of each person involved.
Expected Outcomes
- Improving the well-being of children and adolescents with cancer and/or their families from the moment of diagnosis
- Preventing the appearance of sequelae or existing ones becoming chronic
- Early diagnosis of physical, social, and cognitive consequences
The beneficiaries
The direct beneficiaries will be about 250 children with cancer-related conditions.
The indirect beneficiaries are the other direct relatives of the children, whose number is estimated to be 150.
