In recent years, important changes have taken place in Chile. An ageing population, an increase in cancer deaths, new epidemiological diseases, and people's mental health have generated a demand that exceeds the care capacity of hospitals. In this context, eight hospitals in the Metropolitan Region confirmed the great positive impact generated by Animal Assisted Therapy.
What the project involves
Fundación Tregua's project aims to humanise healthcare through the design and implementation of playful, effective, and motivating interventions that integrate therapy dogs and guides.
Indeed, the human-animal bond is increasingly proving to be a unique means of improving the lives of people in vulnerable situations.
Expected Outcomes
- Implementation and evaluation of Animal Assisted Therapy
- Humanisation of health care
- Involvement of an increasing number of hospitals
The beneficiaries
The project is aimed at children, young people, adults and the elderly, together with their families and/or carers, who are treated in the hospitals where Fundación Tregua now runs its pet therapy programmes. In addition, it benefits health care teams and staff in the hospitals. In numbers, direct beneficiaries include more than 5,000 people per year and indirect beneficiaries 20,000.
