The Emporio Abito was opened in the autumn of 2019 to cope with the increase in homeless people and families in severe economic hardship. Centrally located in the Quadrilatero Romano district (Turin), at Via Santa Maria 6/I, it is only a few steps away from the Porta Palazzo market, a popular meeting place.
What the project involves
The project aims to contribute to the social inclusion of children and young people in financial difficulties by distributing clothing. At Abito, you not only receive the clothes you need, but you can choose them as you would in a real shop, giving an interlude of normality to those who face a thousand difficulties every day.
In addition to meeting a material need, clothes play a fundamental role in people's psychological well-being, helping them to feel respected and comfortable.
Expected Outcomes
- Poverty reduction and access to the primary good of clothing
- Valuing second hand goods: in 2023 alone, 37,000 items of second-hand clothing were collected and donated
- Combating social exclusion through the provision of decent clothes
The beneficiaries
Emporio Abito welcomes 1,194 children and minors and 653 adults aged 18-35 years, offering them clothes that make them feel comfortable at work, at school, and simply around others. Among the adults, 15% are homeless, while 70% of the beneficiaries have foreign backgrounds.
