The appeal of audiovisual sector professions is growing significantly and Naples is one of the most in-demand cinematography sets nationally. Since the Film Commission was set up in 2005, Naples has gone from approximately ten productions per year to more than 1300, including films, series, and documentaries. The triumph of the works of Sorrentino and Martone at the “David of Donatello” awards is tangible proof of the importance of this appeal for the city, often described as the new Cinecittà.

Despite this, much of the qualified workforce needed for the complex production machine often comes from other regions due to an absence of local training that is generally accessible. This forces young enthusiasts to go elsewhere and prevents the less well-off from being able to access this market, which is actually prohibitive for young people at risk of economic and social exclusion, feeding the phenomenon of NEETs.

The project

With this project, Altra Napoli EF wishes to help young NEETs from contexts at risk of economic and social marginality, such as Forcella and the Sanità quarter, enter the labour market, by giving them the necessary skills to work in the audiovisual sector - audio editing, pre-production, filming, post-production, video editing, and sound design.

The selection and assumption of young people to be involved in the project will also be followed by other third-sector organisations belonging to the Sanità and Forcella area educational networks. Thanks to a memorandum with the University of Naples Federico II, the young NEETs will be welcomed within the Department of Social Sciences where teaching activities will be held. This will mean students are trained at the oldest secular university in Europe.

The beneficiaries

The AudioVisual Napoli Hub project involves 60 young people at risk of economic and social exclusion resident in the vulnerable districts of Naples.

It is actually estimated that Naples is the province with the highest number of NEETs compared to the national total, with peaks of 41.5%. This phenomenon is especially worrying in the most vulnerable areas like the Sanità district, a suburb within the city centre. Here, the school dropout rate is one of the highest in Europe and the unemployment rate reached 42.7%, with peaks of 60% among young people. The Forcella district is also marked by a similar situation. This area is unfortunately known for its Camorra wars, resulting in unemployment rates above 40%, including 24% looking for their first job.
