Resilience of communities to natural disasters

THE SCENARIO

ITALY
According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), Italy is the country in Europe with the highest risk of natural disasters. Floods and earthquakes are the phenomena that occur most frequently with very high incidence in terms of both fatal and economic incidents. The expected loss per year associated with the recurrence of earthquakes is estimated at 9 billion euros.

The INFORM RISK 2017 index, which has slightly increased since 2012, reveals critical issues in particular regarding exposure to the event and coping capacity of communities and recovery in the post-emergency phase.

SPAIN
According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), Spain is among the leading countries in Europe for mortality related to natural events. Floods in particular are the phenomena that occur most frequently, with an estimated economic impact of 995 million euros.

The INFORM RISK 2017 index, with a slight increase since 2012, reveals critical issues in particular regarding exposure to the event.

CHILE
Floods and earthquakes are the phenomena that occur most frequently with very high incidence in terms of both fatal and economic incidents. The expected loss per year associated with the recurrence of earthquakes is estimated at 2 billion euros.

The INFORM RISK 2017 index reveals critical issues in particular regarding exposure to the event and coping capacity of communities and recovery in the post-emergency phase.

REALE FOUNDATION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES AREA

According to the CRED - Center for the Epidemiology of Disaster, in 2016, 411 million people were affected by natural disasters, a number four times higher than in 2015 and with damages amounting to 190 billion dollars in 2008 alone.

Extreme atmospheric phenomena are destined to increase: according to the analysis of the European Commission Joint Research Center (ECJRC), the lack of adaptation measures to climate change and of risk prevention policies could lead to deaths from natural disasters to increase by fifty times compared to the levels of the eighties.

Based on this trend, by the end of the 21st century, two out of three Europeans will find themselves exposed to lethal dangers compared to a current average of one in ten.

By way of example, Reale Foundation can support:

  • Initiatives for the supply of basic necessities in the acute phase of an emergency

  • Initiatives to organise mobile clinics and field hospitals

  • Initiatives to facilitate the school attendance of children and young people

  • Initiatives for the revitalisation of the socio-economic fabric and reconstruction, for example through support to social employment enterprises that stimulate recovery and employment

Within the scope of the projects launched in this area of intervention, Reale Foundation can also support initiatives that aim to reduce risk exposure and vulnerability of communities affected by earthquakes and floods.

By way of example, Reale Foundation can support initiatives for the creation and training of teams of volunteers in the community; for the supply of kits in preparation for the emergency; for diagnosis of the hydrogeological and seismic risks in high-exposure areas in order to increase risk awareness and strengthen the capacity of local communities to act in a prevention perspective.

This area of intervention also includes support for development projects and artistic and cultural development of the territory, which has always been of primary interest to the Reale Group, and for initiatives that promote sustainable mobility.
