The Colorado Valley, located in the municipality of San José de Maipo in the metropolitan region of Chile, is a Cordilleran territory of high environmental and tourist value. Despite its enormous natural, cultural and economic potential, the area suffers from a poor articulation between public bodies and local communities and a still limited development of mountain tourism.
In this context, the strengthening of mountain culture and the creation of sustainable models become key tools for promoting territorial equity, local identity and new economic opportunities.
What the project involves
The initiative focuses on training and active community involvement in the management of the Tupungato refuge as a driver of sustainable tourism. There are 6 classroom training modules and 3 field trips, which will train 30 people on responsible and sustainable tourism practices. The project also aims at the creation of at least 3 new community tourism services and the installation of a collaborative shelter management model, fostering social innovation, inclusion and shared governance.
Alignment with national and regional policies for sustainability and territorial equity reinforces the prospect of a lasting impact on the community and the territory.
The beneficiaries
The direct beneficiaries are 25 inhabitants of the municipality of San José de Maipo and the 657,053 mountaineers of the Metropolitan Region who frequent the area. Indirect beneficiaries amount to over 7 million people from the same region, who will be able to take advantage of an expanded, more sustainable tourism offer linked to territorial identity.
In particular, the local community will benefit from the formation and formalization of tourist services, with new employment opportunities and a strengthening of the link with its natural and cultural heritage.
