On 24 August 2016, the town of Arquata del Tronto (AP) was violently hit by an earthquake: in the tragedy, 50 people lost their lives and most of the buildings collapsed or were seriously damaged. All 1137 residents were displaced since the conditions of safety and accessibility of buildings throughout the area are no longer guaranteed.
The La Stampa - Specchio dei tempi Foundation immediately launched a subscription: more than 10,000 people contributed from Italy and abroad. The goal, after a discussion with the local community, was soon identified: rebuild the no longer accessible schools of the town. A year later, on 15 September 2017, the new anti-seismic eco-school was donated to the Municipality of Arquata del Tronto and duly opened for the beginning of the school year. The building covers an area of approx. 1,000 square metres and houses the kindergarten, primary school and middle school.
Having overcome the emergency linked to the serious earthquake, the inhabitants expressed the desire to return to live in their town and return to the daily routine and work. The guarantee of being able to take advantage of a safe and comfortable scholastic structure, one of the fundamental fulcrums in family life, increased the number of people who made this choice.
A new goal, to complete the school building, is the construction of the gym, a key place for the exercise of motor and sports activities, with the aim of improving the psychophysical development and individual and social health of young people.
Local organisations will have the possibility to organise activities and sports events; it will also be a large and safe space that can accommodate many people in the event of new disasters.
The gym project aims to be the conclusion and completion of the Arquata del Tronto School Complex, previously built thanks to the subscription launched by Specchio dei Tempi after the 26 August 2016 earthquake, that he received approx. 10,000 donations.
