Young people with intellectual disabilities can benefit from schooling up to the age of 20, exceptionally up to 21. However, the supply of places in public or private facilities does not have the capacity to meet the demand that arises each year. This results in people with intellectual disabilities remaining at home, without receiving the support they need.
What the project involves
With this project, San Rafael Fundación Estima promotes independent living and equal opportunities for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities with complex needs in the Alicante community. They are offered a day care programme that stands out for its high level of customisation and positive impact on the neighbourhoods in which it is developed.
The programme stimulates autonomy through learning, preparation for work, and therapeutic activities, coordinating with families.
Expected Outcomes
- Involvement of people with disabilities in community life
- Support for families
- Greater autonomy in social and decision-making processes
The beneficiaries
The project will involve 17 people, 7 women, and 10 men. Everyone has an intellectual disability: 7 of the 17 users above 75%, the rest at 65%. Three people suffer from autism, one from Down syndrome, and another from cerebral palsy, which requires a wheelchair for long journeys.
