AfIC brings to Samos the experience gained in European projects on the theme of healthy ageing and integrated care. The island has specific needs related to the aging of the population and the fragility of local social services; in parallel, adolescents with disabilities need interventions that favor social integration and improvement of motor functions.

In this context, an approach that combines creative movement, prevention and strengthening of territorial networks responds both to the urgency of counteracting age-related risks and to the need to offer inclusion paths for young people.

What the project involves

The project takes place in the municipality of Eastern Samos and is divided into regular workshops of motor improvisation and kinesiology guided by methodology “creative personification of a new mind”. The activities, designed to be adaptable to different levels of ability, combine movement exercises, guided improvisation, balance practices and motor games designed to increase coordination and body confidence.

The project also includes a programmatic agreement with the Social Services of the Municipality and the NGO MELLISA for the planning, monitoring and evaluation of the results, as well as actions for the sustainability and replicability of the intervention.

The beneficiaries

The direct beneficiaries are 25 elderly people and 25 adolescents with disabilities, involved in the activities together with their caregivers who participate as active partners of the path. Indirect beneficiaries include municipal social and health services, local NGOs, regional health services and the intermunicipal network of “healthy cities” (EDDYPPY), which will benefit from the practices formed and the protocols shared.

Expected outcomes include reducing fear of falling, improving motor function and mood, increasing self-esteem, and decreasing the perceived care burden of family members and providers, with benefits extended to the community as a whole.
